In an era where many shows either get cancelled before they can really get going or take ages to be released, it's incredibly refreshing that a programme like Only Murders In the Building (OMITB) has put out one high quality season a year since it's original release in 2021, especially when you consider the star quality of the three leads, Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. As of writing, we are currently 8 episodes into Season 4 with two episodes remaining and once again, the creators of this season have smashed it out of the park.
For those who don't know the show, it's currently available on Disney+ in the UK and through Hulu/Disney+ in the USA and I can highly recommend it for anyone who's interested in Comedy and Mysteries TV genres. The plot follows Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) who all live in the titular building in question, The Arconia. In its simplest form, the show follows the trio as they investigate a series of murders whilst recording an ever-increasing popularity true crime podcast. Whilst that may sound like the potential for serious topics, the show is predominantly incredibly light in nature, often relying on the silly antics of the main trio as they try to work out whodunnit.
All the characters in the show have fantastic unique characterisation, with incredibly strong character performances from the leading trio clearly being benefited by a series of well written scripts. One of the things I really enjoy about the show is how meta it is throughout, with each season of the podcast coinciding with each season of the show in real life allowing for varied amounts of jokes about the show's increased popularity over the years. The show is also doing incredibly well at getting big guest stars which is a testament to how good the show is viewed, although it could also be because Steve Martin is one of the creators of the show and he most likely has quite a famous phonebook.
On a side note, I've recently been reading up quite a lot about Steve Martin's career after watching the new two part documentary on Apple TV+ about him. For those that don't know about it, 'STEVE! (Martin) a documentary in two pieces' (2024) is a brilliant watch for those interested in knowing more about his career. The first part follows the early years as he navigates his rise in stand up comedy through old clips and voiceovers whereas the second part follows him as he prepares to do a night of comedy with Martin Short and includes a large amount of recently filmed talking heads. Personally, I didn't quite know the depth of his career before this documentary although I've always been a fan of his work growing up with 'I would like an HAMMMMBURGERRR' from Pink Panther being one of the few movie quotes I regularly quote. I definitely didn't quite realise how big a stand up comedian he was before his movie career took off. So if that sounds like something you might be interested in, then I can really recommend it as a good watch.
Anyway, back to Season 4 of Only Murders..
Without getting into too many spoilers, Season 4 follows the main trio as they navigate once again needing to try to solve a murder, but this time whilst also dealing with the fact they are now so popular in their universe, a film studio wants to make a film out of them. This allows the introduction of Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis (all playing themselves) for the season as they are hired to play Charles, Mabel and Oliver in the in-universe film. As well as this, it also introduces the Westies who live in the opposite wing of the building to them which includes the legendary Richard Kind and Kumil Nanjiani in its array of residents!
I think overall it's a really strong season so far, with its normal amount of high chaos and hilarity. The show also manages to again nail the really fine balance of keeping the humanity of the characters at the forefront by continually focusing on developing their own relationships and adding more depth to the characters backstories whilst also letting the wacky storylines play out. Going into the final two episodes, I am not 100% on where they're going to go with wrapping up and personally, I am intrigued with what the set up will be for the recently announced next season of the show.
Overall, I can really recommend this show with Only Murders In The Building comfortably being one of my favourite shows in recent years. Before every season comes out, I am slightly concerned that the show won't match the previous season but so far, it's continually smashed it out of the park. If you're reading this now (15th October), this season is due to end at the end of October so there's even still time to catch up if you have the time!
