I started using letterboxd (an app where you can log your film watches) towards the end of 2022 and i have to say, i've really enjoyed the process of logging film watches ever since. I did have a brief fling with the app back in 2018 which is fun to look back on. If you're wondering, my favourite film (according to past me's efforts) that year was Game Night, which I fully recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. However, when it comes to 2023, as of writing, I have apparently watched 174 films so far this year. I reckon there's probably room for one or two more between now and NYE, but realistically I would say 174 films is a pretty good effort (or just under 2 weeks worth of film watching). Using this data, I am going to break down my favourite films this year. This is going to be everything from favourite films from this year specifically, but also honourable mentions to films I've watched this year and just really enjoyed.
Out of the 174 films I watched, 18 of those were 5 Stars, 48 of those were 4 Stars, 91 at 3 Stars, 16 at 2 Stars, and 1 at the solo 1 Star. I also think it's worth mentioning that Jennifer Lawrence is apparently my most watched star this year which I can't help but enjoy. Although I imagine that is predominantly because I rewatched the Hunger Games franchise.
HERE ARE MY FAVOURITE FILMS RELEASED THIS YEAR:
Bottoms (5 STARs)
Like many people, I really enjoyed Bottoms, a film that follows PJ and Josie, two lesbians, as they start a high school fight club in order to try lose their virginities to the popular cheerleaders. It's a really funny film with two very strong leads in Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri.
Theater Camp (5 STARS)
Another really funny film which I perhaps enjoyed more than I should have done because of my love of musicals. The film is directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, who interestingly did a short film version of the film before this got made, and follows Amos Klobuchar (Ben Platt) as he attempts to keep the camp afloat over one summer. This film also features Jimmy Tatro, as Troy Rubinsky, who is fantastic as the camp owners son.
The Flash (5 Stars)
Ok hear me out, I know it's not the best film ever but I really enjoyed it to the point of actually rewatching it a few days after my first watch. Looking back, I think my love of CW's The Flash definitely warped my few of this film but it's considerably more fun then a lot of critics gave it credit for.. although the bad scenes are bad..
HONOURABLE MENTION FOR OTHER 5 STARS FILMS I'VE WATCHED THIS YEAR
In the build up to Christmas, I watched Amazon's Your Christmas or Mine? from last year which I really enjoyed. The sequel that came out this year is also very good but for me, Your Christmas or Mine? is just a very well made romcom that I highly recommend.
As you may know from these blogs, I believe that the OG X-Men films deserve more love. Please just watch X-Men: Days of Future Past. It's so good (if you watch the other ones too..)
Other 5 star films this year included; Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Lion, Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium, Tick Tick.. BOOM!, The Lego Movie, Zack Snyder's Justice League, We Bought a Zoo, La La Land, Once Upon a Studio and of course.. the best Christmas film of all time.. Nativity!
Other stats from my Letterboxd I think are fun..
I averaged 14.5 films a month and 3.4 a week.
My first film was Good Luck to you, Leo Grande.
My 100th film was Madagascar.
My 150th film was Avengers Infinity War
My most watched genre was Comedy.
My most watched 'nanogenre' was Superheroes in Action-Packed Battles with Villains.
The one film I gave 1 star? 65 starring Adam Driver. It stinks. Poor guy..
